OECD released the first PISA 2025 results on September 8, 2026. More than 760,000 students took part across 91 countries and economies, representing about 33 million 15-year-olds. Science was the major assessment domain, with reading and mathematics reported alongside it.
PISA 2025 OECD Average Scores
Mean scores across OECD countries in the three core PISA domains.
PISA reports science, reading and mathematics on separate scales. The positions below are calculated from the published mean scores for each domain, not from a combined score. Equal reported whole-number scores share the same position. Because PISA estimates include sampling uncertainty, small score gaps should not be treated as proof that one education system clearly outperformed another.
Highest PISA 2025 Mean Scores by Domain
B-S-J-Z (China) recorded the highest published mean score in science and mathematics, while Singapore recorded the highest reading score.
Systems in the Top 10 Science Positions and Their Scores Across All Three Domains
Systems are ordered by their PISA 2025 science mean score, the major domain for this cycle. Eleven systems appear because New Zealand and Australia share the 10th score-based position.
The chart shows reported mean scores, not an overall composite score. Country-to-country differences should be read with the statistical uncertainty of PISA estimates in mind.
PISA 2025 Scores and Score-Based Positions by Country and Economy
All 91 PISA 2025 countries and economies are shown. The table is ordered by science mean score because science was the major domain in 2025.

Positions are derived from the published whole-number mean scores. Tied scores share a position. They are not OECD range-of-rank estimates. An asterisk marks Albania, Canada, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway and the United States, for which OECD advises caution because one or more PISA sampling standards were not met. The letter m means the data are not available in the OECD table.
What Changed From PISA 2022 to PISA 2025
Average performance across the OECD was nearly unchanged in science but fell more in reading and mathematics.
Science was more stable than reading and mathematics
Across the 35 OECD countries used for the short-term trend comparison, science performance changed little between 2022 and 2025. Reading fell by about 14 points and mathematics by about 9 points. OECD Table I.1 excludes Costa Rica, Luxembourg and Spain from the OECD average used for these short-term change figures.
How to Interpret the Country and Economy Results
- Mean score
- The average estimated PISA performance of the assessed 15-year-old student population in a country or economy for a specific domain.
- Score-based position
- A position calculated here by sorting the OECD-published whole-number mean scores from highest to lowest. It is descriptive and does not replace OECD statistical comparisons or rank ranges.
- Country/economy
- OECD uses this wording because the PISA reporting set includes countries as well as participating economies and reporting jurisdictions such as B-S-J-Z (China), Hong Kong (China), Macao (China), Chinese Taipei, Dushanbe (Tajikistan) and Ukrainian regions (17 of 27).
- Sampling caution
- OECD flags several systems with an asterisk where one or more sampling standards were not met. Their estimates remain reported, but the results require added caution.
OECD identified inconsistencies in Uzbekistan’s 2025 reading and mathematics response data that affected comparability. The OECD therefore reports Uzbekistan’s science result but does not publish comparable reading or mathematics scale scores in the main PISA 2025 results tables.
Data Sources and Measurement
The principal source is OECD’s PISA 2025 Results (Volume I), released September 8, 2026. The performance table draws on the official science, reading and mathematics mean-score tables and the Volume I executive snapshot.
