PISA 2025 assessed science as its major domain across 91 participating countries and economies. The OECD average science score was 482 points. B-S-J-Z (China) recorded the highest reported mean at 597, followed by Singapore at 560. The ordering on this page follows reported mean scores and should not be read as a precise statistical rank when neighboring estimates are close.
Science performance across PISA 2025
Reported mean scores provide the main comparison layer; the OECD average and full international range give context for the ordering.
These positions are calculated from the reported mean science scores, with equal rounded scores sharing the same position. They are not an OECD claim that every adjacent system is statistically distinguishable. The OECD comparison table identifies many overlapping peer groups where score differences are too small relative to sampling uncertainty to support a precise ordinal interpretation.

The OECD average is a benchmark, not an additional participant row. A positive or negative arithmetic gap does not by itself establish a statistically detectable difference. Country and economy labels follow OECD reporting terminology, including regional reporting entities such as Ukrainian regions (17 of 27), Kurdistan Region (Iraq) and Dushanbe (Tajikistan).
Recent movement differs from the 2025 score order
A system’s 2025 level and its change since PISA 2022 answer different questions. The chart shows selected large increases and declines from the OECD’s comparable 2022–2025 set.
Largest selected science-score changes, 2022 to 2025
Score-point change among systems with comparable results in OECD Table I.2.6
The chart shows selected extremes rather than all comparable systems. Point changes describe movement between cycles; they do not identify causes.
- Science performance was broadly stable in 48 of the 74 systems that the OECD could compare between 2022 and 2025, even though score-based positions can still shift as other systems move.
- Georgia, Cambodia, Jordan and Montenegro recorded some of the largest increases in the comparable set, while Latvia, Hong Kong (China), Israel and Guatemala recorded some of the largest declines.
What a PISA science mean score represents
A country or economy mean summarizes the distribution of performance among sampled 15-year-old students. It is not the score of a single “average student,” and it should not be converted directly into an individual proficiency description. Proficiency levels are a separate distributional measure based on the shares of students reaching defined points on the science scale.
Science was the major domain in PISA 2025. The assessment covered scientific knowledge and the use of evidence, models, enquiry and information evaluation in personal, local and global contexts. Mean scores are estimates based on samples rather than a census of every 15-year-old student.
Data sources and measurement
OECD, PISA 2025 Results (Volume I): Future-Ready Students, released 8 September 2026. The report covers 91 participating countries and economies and reports science as the major domain.
OECD, Student performance in PISA 2025. The full ordering uses Table I.2.1 and the PISA 2025 Database table identified there as I.B1.2.1. The 2022–2025 change chart uses values reported in Table I.2.6.
OECD Student Scores dashboard marks Albania, Canada, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway and the United States with an asterisk because one or more PISA sampling standards were not met. Their estimates should be interpreted with caution.
Scores are shown as rounded whole-number means, matching the OECD presentation. Equal rounded means share the same score-based position on this page. Small differences in reported means can coexist with statistical overlap, so the order should be used as a descriptive comparison rather than as a precise league table.
